Free Air

FREE Air, at ‘Sculpture on the Gulf 2011’ on Waiheke Island, was a participate installation giving visitors the ability to create & control movements of unexpected magnitude. On the headland of Matiatia Bay, an oversize hand pump with a yellow hose disappearing into the ground & a buoyant rusty sculpture in the ocean below was seen.

Pumping brought the installation to life, with the end of the hose suddenly appearing from the ocean’s depth & drawing foaming lines across its surface. Besides visitors to the outdoor exhibition, anyone swimming, diving, or coming into the Bay by chance on boats, canoes, or ferries, became unexpectedly a participant in the spectacle.
